Comparing Magazine Articles

My first article was from Shape magazine. It was all about body image, losing weight, and a woman's struggle to get fit. I chose it because I felt it really related to Bridget Jones' Diary because this woman was struggling with her own body image and weight issues. Also this lady kept a diary of her daily struggles, which I thought definitely related to Bridget.

The second article I found was from askmen.com which is an online men's magazine. This article was extremely different from the women's one. It was titled "Why do Single Women Like Taken Men?" The article listed nine different reasons why single women supposedly like taken men. I thought this article was completely ridiculous. For one, it was written by a man, and secondly, as a single women I can assure you that I am not attracted to men with girlfriends, wives, fiancees, etc. I noticed that while the women's article tried point out flaws in your body and just really make you notice your insecurities, while the men's article tried to boost the ego.

However different the articles were, I did notice a couple similarities. Both articles were extremely shallow and superficial. Unfortunately, myself and more than half of the people out there will continue to read these types of articles and let them shape the way we think.

In response to the question about what I picture a writer being: I don't necessarily have a definite view of what a writer should look like. I guess I sort of picture a frazzled individual, not necessarily on the outside, but on the inside. To be a writer, requires tons of thinking and creating which I imagine could make anyone go a little bit crazy at times.

  1. Very interesting difference: women's article makes women feel insecure; men's boosts their ego. Wonder why?

Make sure you also post in response to the class blog prompt on BJD.

  2. I feel you...I always say I'll never pick up another "shallow" magazine again, but something keeps me coming back...
