Bridget Jones - The Book vs. The Movie

When I first learned we were watching Bridget Jones in class I was super excited because my roommate has been telling me what a great movie it is. However while watching the movie I found myself making a lot of comparisons between my image of what Bridget should look like and the movie's version of Bridget. I thought they made Bridget entirely to frumpy and gross looking. In the book I believe she weighs 130 pounds. I can tell you I weigh a few pounds more than Bridget and she looked a lot bigger than me. We talked about this in class some, but I also saw Bridget as being this fabulous single woman. Yes she had insecurities, don't we all, but I imagined her much more put together on the outside. She seemed very plain and never looked like this fabulous woman I imagined. I took this as the media and our culture's way of saying 1) if you're not a size 2 you're fat and 2) if you're older and single well then there must be something wrong with you. No one could be this fabulous gorgeous woman and still be single at 30. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie and laughed hysterically at certain parts. I just felt they did a bod job of portraying Bridget as a real life person.
